About Me

Hi!

I'm Jennifer DeVries (she/her) owner and therapist at Encourage Joy Therapy. I am an introverted person who gravitates towards alone time but am constantly reminding myself to be social.  My mom was my most influential style icon growing up, teaching me early that gender norms are stupid. Picking out my outfit everyday is a small act that brings me joy, and although I love bright colors, I rarely wear them. I try to prioritize time to be creative which currently includes quilting and knitting. I am a spouse, sister, daughter, auntie, dog-parent and friend.

Being a shy, anxious person I have gravitated towards helping others who are hesitant to open up to others. I know that sitting on a couch and having someone look at you while you are sharing personal details can be overwhelming and anxiety producing. We can talk if that feels best or use art, music, or other creative outlets to help you express yourself.

What I love most about being a therapist is connecting with others and celebrating what makes each person unique. In my practice I create space where you get to feel seen, heard, understood and feel confident in exploring what you are needing to experience joy.

I’ve been working with clients whose ages range from pre-teens to young adults for over 10 years. I have worked in outpatient clinics and schools since 2012 and recently opened up my own practice. Throughout my career I have been trained in several evidenced based therapy modalities. I am an eclectic therapist which means that I use several therapy modalities to best match each client’s unique needs. I graduated with a Masters of Art in Mental Health Counseling from University of Northern Iowa in 2012 and have been practicing therapy ever since.

One of the most important parts of therapy is the relationship between therapist and client. I encourage and welcome conversations about my identities and background so we can explore our similarities and differences. When we talk openly about our identities in therapy it allows us to build a safe and trusting relationship.

My Office

My office is upstairs in suite 201. There are several seating options, fidgets, soft pillows and blankets, and art supplies. My office gets natural light but we have the ability to limit the light as needed. My hope is that my office feels comfortable. I am open to suggestions to make the space comfortable for you.

Waiting Room

I share office space with other mental health providers and we share a waiting room. The waiting room is in suite 101 B, which is off to the left when you enter the front doors. There are gender neutral bathrooms on the first and second floor of the building. You will wait for your appointment in the waiting room and I will come down to get you at your appointment time.
